How to choose

Built-in grinder or separate

A machine with a built-in grinder (Breville Barista Pro, Barista Express Impress) is the simplest way to start: one box, one plug. A separate grinder costs more up front but can be upgraded or kept when you change machines.

Boiler type

A single boiler brews and steams one after the other. A heat exchanger (Lelit MaraX) steams while it brews. A dual boiler (Breville Dual Boiler, Lelit Bianca) has separate boilers for each, which helps if you make several milk drinks in a row. Thermocoil and ThermoJet heaters heat up fast.

Temperature control (PID)

A PID controller holds brew water at a set temperature. Most of our picks list PID in their specs; where the maker does not list it, we say so.

Portafilter size

58mm is the commercial standard and has the widest choice of baskets and tampers. Breville's smaller machines use 54mm.

Footprint and water

Check depth under your cabinets and the water tank size. Every pick lists dimensions and tank size from the maker where published.

FAQ

How did you choose these espresso machines?

From the models in our catalog, using each maker's published specs (heating system, PID, portafilter size, tank, warranty) and list prices. We do not bench-test or use the machines, and we do not show ratings or review counts because our data does not include them.

Why are some prices missing?

Some European prosumer brands do not publish a U.S. price on their own site and sell through dealers. We leave the price out rather than guess.

What should I spend on a first espresso machine?

Among our picks, list prices start at $299.95 (Breville Bambino). Remember to budget for a grinder unless the machine has one built in.

Are the photos of these exact machines?

No. Product photos are added only from approved retailer feeds. Until then each pick shows an illustrative espresso photo, labelled as such, with its photo credit.
